At the edge of the Lava Sea, I tried to take his picture. “No,” said the guide, “point that thing away.”

I took a picture of Alyx instead.

“They’ve started coming out of the plain at night and spark the flanks of Mt. Washington.”

“What do?” I asked.

He considered a while. “Never mind,” he said.
